  11.       designed to enable full duplex printing of a wide
  12.       range of DTP documents on a Hewlett Packard (or
  13.       equivalent with PCL emulation) Laserjet printer
  14.       with a full DUPLEX option.

  32. Introduction
  33.  
  34.  In order to enable printing on both sides of the paper many
  35. current systems require that you turn over the output stack
  36. of paper after printing the first side and then re-insert it
  37. into the printer input tray to print the second side. This
  38. can be very time-consuming and it can prove difficult to
  39. achieve an easy flow of paper on the second side.
  40.  
  41.  The first problem is the need to `square off' the stack of
  42. paper in order to place it back in the imput tray. Due to
  43. electrostatic effects and slightly uneven stacking it can be
  44. quite difficult to replace it in the tray so that it `feeds'
  45. cleanly and evenly for the second side.
  46.  
  47.  There can also be problems with paper `curl' which may
  48. affect the pick up mechanism causing missfeeds and even
  49. paper jams.
  50.  
  51.  High quality paper helps but this can prove expensive.
  52.  
  53.  Many of these problems disappear if you can use a printer
  54. with a duplex option ie. one which is able to turn the paper
  55. over automatically and print the second side. Most laser
  56. printers can be bought with this option and some can be
  57. updated to full duplex.
  58.  
  59.  There are however at least three remaining problems a) Many
  60. LaserJet Printer Drivers do not have a duplex option b) The
  61. printing options on  DTP packages may print pages in the
  62. wrong sequence for the duplex printing. c) The margins set
  63. by many printers on front and back printing passes are wrong
  64. for duplex.
  65.  
  66.  LjDuplex can help solve these problems by modifying the
  67. output of the printer driver a) By inserting the necessary
  68. duplex commands into the print string b) By re-ordering the
  69. pages as required and c) Resetting the `Logical Page' so as
  70. to make the front and back margins equal. For convenience it
  71. can also modify the number of copies printed. You can print
  72. a test copy and then send hundreds of copies to the printer.
  73.  
  74. Requirements
  75.  
  76.  A hard disk is essential. The LaserJet printer used must
  77. have a `duplex'' option and enough memory to hold all the
  78. text and graphics on both sides of the paper. It should be
  79. connected to the parallel port of your Archimedes.
  80.  
  81. Status

  83.  This software has been tested using Impression Publisher on
  84. a RISC PC using the standard Acorn Hewlett Packard printer
  85. drivers. It may also work for other Archimedes machines and
  86. for other DTP programs and drivers. If you have problems
  87. please send a copy of your print file (see later) with
  88. details of your machine configuration to Mijas Software and
  89. we will attempt to resolve it. If is NOT intended for use
  90. with Laser Direct type printers or other printer types which
  91. do no use the Hewlett Packard PCL printer language.

  93. Installation 
  94.  
  95.  Copy the software provided to a convenient position on your
  96. hard disk. Identify a disk location for the output file
  97. which will be generated by your printer drivers. NOTE this
  98. can be many megabytes! Configure your printer driver to
  99. output to file (see later if you have not done this before).

  103.  This software is provided on the understanding that it is
  104. shareware and will not be used for an extended (more than 30
  105. days) period without registration. The software may not be
  106. modified or distributed in any form other than as a full
  107. image of the disk provided.

  116. Booklet Printing (A5 on A4 landscape)
  117.  
  118.  Construct your booklet in A5 page format as  usual ensuring
  119. that you have a multiple of 4 A5 pages. Print as for 1 copy
  120. in booklet format and allow both sides to be printed to a
  121. single file. Double click on the !LJduplex icon and `drag'
  122. your printer output file onto the ljduplex iconbar icon. The
  123. first time this is done we suggest that you click with
  124. `MENU' on the LjDuplex icon bar icon go to the `save
  125. choices' option and click on it. This will save your
  126. configuration,  Next choose the number of copies to be
  127. printed, leaving the other options at the default settings
  128. initially. When ready click on `PRINT'.  Once set up, this
  129. process can be repeated as often as required. We suggest
  130. that you print one check copy and then any longer run when
  131. this has been proof read.

  133. Left/Top offset
  134.  
  135.  The is an option on the dialog box to set the left margin
  136. of the printout. Many laser printers have a larger TOP
  137. margin (in booklet or landscape this is the left) than the
  138. BOTTOM or right margin. Since the paper is turned over
  139. between passes TOP and BOTTOM are changed over. This can
  140. make it very difficult to print booklet pages so that the
  141. front and back margins `match'. Often attempts to do this
  142. result in `clipping' of one side or a very reduced matching
  143. print area. The cure is to reset the position of the LOGICAL
  144. PAGE of the printer so that the top and bottom margins are
  145. the same. This is done by putting a (usually) positive value
  146. in the left/top offset box. The value is in picas (1/720
  147. inch) at the default choice of 280 is about right for our
  148. Laserjet III SI duplex printer.
  149.  
  150. Collated
  151.  
  152.  When multiple copies are printed the default is to print
  153. all the copies of the first sheet and then all the copies of
  154. subsequent sheets. If the collated option is set LjDuplex
  155. will print successive full copies which do not require
  156. subsequent collation.
  157.  
  158. Alternate Output Trays
  159.  
  160.  When the collated option is not in use it can be convenient
  161. to send alternated output sheets to alternate output trays
  162. on the printer. This enables long print runs to be carried
  163. out with minimum supervision. Non-Booklet Printing (A4
  164. Portrait) LjDuplex can be used for other duplex work. e.g.
  165. Duplex A4 in portrait mode.  This will require LjDuplex to
  166. be set for long edge binding by clearing the short edge bind
  167. flag. In this case the left/Top offset becomes a top margin
  168. adjustment. A value of 280 is again just about right for our
  169. IISi laser printer.
  170.  
  171. A5 Pamphlet printing
  172.  
  173.  If you wish to print two duplex A5 pamphlets on a single A4
  174. sheet for subsequent cutting to A5, proceed as for normal
  175. printing but create only the two pages required. Load the
  176. printout file into edit and drag a second copy into the edit
  177. window and save. This will then print as required.
  178.  
  179. Printing to file
  180.  
  181.  Double click on !printers to bring the LsJet icon onto the
  182. icon bar. Click on the icon with `Menu' and then on `Printer
  183. Control. Click on the LaserJet entry with `Menu' and then on
  184. `Connection'. You can then click on `File'. Click on the
  185. `File' radio button and then on the `Menu' option on the
  186. right hand side of the `File' line and drag the `PRINTOUT'
  187. file to a suitable place on your hard disk. (This is the
  188. file you will later `drag' onto the LJduplex icon.) Finally
  189. click on `OK' to set printing to file for this session only.
  190. (ie until you click on the `Parallel' option or re-boot). If
  191. you also click on `save-choices' on the Laserjet Icon on the
  192. Icon bar the printer file will be `remembered' by the system
  193. and you will be able to switch from printing direct to the
  194. printer or printing to file by just clicking of the radio
  195. button on the `printer connections' dialogue box. To change
  196. your `standard' configuration back to direct printing click
  197. on the `parallel' radio icon and then again on `save
  198. choices' on the icon bar menu.

  200. Mijas Software

  202.  Mijas Software was set up to bring specialist applications
  203. already available elsewhere,  to the Archimedes range of
  204. machines. This current duplex program was generated in
  205. response to an internal requirement for generating
  206. manuals/magazines etc. in A5 format using the Impression
  207. program. Other products include the ArcSimp analogue/digital
  208. simulation program which is aimed at educational, hobby and
  209. industrial applications. Mijas Software are always
